Discoveries connected to this place

Emil Saalfeld first arrived at New York on 14 January 1923 aboard SS America, initially bound for Atlanta, and returned to New York on 7 February 1926 aboard SS Albert Ballin after reporting a 1923-1925 stay in New York.

The 1923 manifest independently identifies Emil through his father Ignatz and Limburg birthplace and says he had not previously been in the United States. The 1926 manifest again identifies Limburg and explicitly reports prior United States residence in New York from 1923 to 1925. Together they establish two arrivals and explain why the 1938 naturalization file used the 1926 entry as his lawful permanent-residence arrival.

Confirmed
Josephine Schwarzschild left Stuttgart in 1939, arrived at New York on 2 May and San Francisco on 24 May, and lived at 3897 Clay Street with siblings Melita Levy and Ludwig Einstein in 1940 and 1950.

Two passenger manifests document the continuous 1939 route, and two federal censuses independently repeat the same San Francisco sibling household and address a decade apart.

Confirmed
Max and Caecilie Wortsmann entered the United States at New York on 9 March 1939 aboard the SS Queen Mary; Caecilie named St. Gallen as her last foreign residence, while Max named Stuttgart.

Their separate Certificates of Arrival and naturalization filings agree on the New York date and vessel. Caecilie's declaration and petition both name St. Gallen as her last foreign residence; Max's filings name Stuttgart.

Confirmed
Auguste Saalfeld left Germany on 30 November 1938, traveled through Switzerland to Cherbourg, sailed aboard the SS Aquitania on 3 December, and entered the United States at New York on 9 December 1938; she then resided in Cincinnati until April 1939, Birmingham until 1 September 1939, and Atlanta.

S-022's Certificate of Arrival, declaration, petition, and independent Ohio and Alabama witness depositions agree on the New York arrival and establish the Cincinnati-to-Birmingham-to-Atlanta residence sequence. S-027's Cunard correspondence independently establishes the 3 December Cherbourg sailing, ticket 333320, and Berlin booking. The restitution authority found that she left Germany on 30 November and traveled via Switzerland; counsel separately relayed her daughter's statement that the daughter fled first and met Auguste for several days in Switzerland.
