The earliest currently secure person-specific use of Freeman for Harry Louis Freeman is the 1897 Philadelphia marriage index; an 1889 Omaha directory entry for a policeman named Harry Freeman is a plausible earlier match, while an 1887 Omaha-area newspaper mention of a Harry Freeman is not presently identifiable as the same man.

Evidence

The 1897 marriage index is tied to Harry's known spouse Minnie Saxe and therefore has a strong identity marker. The 1889 directory entry supplies the correct name and Omaha geography but no age, relative, or other unique identifier in the bounded extract. The 1887 newspaper gives only a name in an arrest item and cannot be connected by age, address, occupation, relative, or destination. The digitized Douglas County A-K naturalization index page covering Freeman contains only Joseph Freeman, dated 1870, and no Harry; the NARA Omaha federal index likewise has no Harry Freeman. These are useful negative findings but do not move the earliest secure usage earlier than 1897.

What remains uncertain

No reviewed record identifies a surname used by Harry before Freeman. The digitized Douglas County compilation warns that it may not be complete, and the exact History Nebraska RG0230 V.01 / Roll 1 index has not been directly inspected. The 1889 directory could become the earliest secure use if independent evidence links its policeman to the later Harry through address, occupation, or another unique marker.
